Audi - A3 |
![]() |
If a Golf seems too ordinary, how about A3, its curvier cousin? Although it costs more, A3 has an even classier cabin while sharing Golf's excellent engines and build quality.
| Outclasses BMW 3-Series Compact in ability | |
| Safe, strong body | |
| Very well built, equally well finished | |
| Poor value compared with a SEAT Leon | |
| Above-average service costs for class | |
| Many rivals are roomier in the back |
Impeccable quality and a discreetly classy image are A3's real attractions. Style and substance are givens in the premium small family hatchback niche; engineering excellence is guaranteed thanks to the Audi badge and technology from the Golf (the Mk 3, though high A3 prices compare more closely to Golf Mk 4).
Engines are shared with Audi A4 and Golf; the 1.8T is pleasingly sporty; the pick of the refined but punchy turbodiesels is the 1.9 TDi 130. Handling is sporty but safe. Suspension set-up gives excellent driving responses at the expense of a firm ride.
The interior is perhaps best-in-class, with excellent seats and quality materials. But equipment on basic cars is stingy - you really need to go for SE or Sport trim.
Apart from high used prices, a significant economic downside is above-average running costs in a sector dominated by frugal fleet favourites like Focus.
