BMW's long-awaited 1-Series meets expectations: its rear-wheel drive handling puts it way ahead on driver appeal and it packs all the attributes of larger Beemers into a Golf-sized package.
The 1-Series is set to emulate the 3-Series success as the most desirable driver's car in its class. It's interactive, agile rear-wheel drive dynamics and well-weighted, communicative steering instantly make a new Golf or Astra feel stodgy, and it's clear that the chassis could handle a lot more power.
The exterior design is a little controversial, though people are getting used to the dramatic, aggressive new face of BMW now and at least it's highly distinctive. The 1-Series appears to be beautifully-built and finished, with a high - quality cabin and a good level of standard equipment; all but the 116i have a six - speed gearbox, for a start. Other engines available so far are the 2.0 petrol and BMW's excellent, effortless diesels in the 118d and 120d, and higher - performance hot hatch versions will no doubt follow. Residual values should be excellent, which will go some way to counteract the initially high asking prices.
