Daewoo Leganza Saloon 1997-2002

knobby

quoteThe Daewoo Leganza Saloon comes well-equipped with a wide range of kit to compete with German manufacturers, but at a bargain price. Compared to other cars made by Daewoo, the Leganza is a much better car to drive. It's still not great to drive though with the steering being vague and the ride uncomfortable on all but the smoothest of roads. When the Leganza is weighed up against other cars in its range it comes in at the bottom of the pile due to its poor handling and costly repairs.quote

Pros and Cons:

  • Has got plenty of space
    Comes with lots of equipment
    Is very affordable
  • The car lacks driver appeal
    The reliability is questionable
    Repairs are expensive
    Only one engine available

bullet Exterior and Interior

The only engine, the 2.0-litre petrol produces 133bhp and manages a respectable 30.7mpg for a car of this size. There is the choice of either a 5 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic. The automatic does use up more fuel with the fuel efficiency dropping by 3mpg, but it is the better gearbox and the one to go for.

bullet Engines

The Leganza only comes with the option of a single engine, a 2.0-litre petrol. There is no diesel option available so if you're someone who struggles to choose things then this should suit you. The 2.0-litre petrol has got performance and economy which are similar to many European opponents.EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR:The Leganza was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign who based the design around Jaguars Kensington concept car. Unfortunately, it still looks like most of the other cars from Daewoo. Daewoo have gone out of their way to try and improve the interior though with the Leganza receiving a high quality looking dash and loads of kit. The interior is very spacious with ample room in the front for the driver and passenger and plenty of legroom and elbow space for three passengers in the back. The boot is huge with lots of room for luggage and with split folding rear seats, this space can be increased even further. There are three trim levels to choose from with the basic SX trim coming with air-con, ABS, alloy wheels, electric windows all round, two front airbags and electric door mirrors and sunroof. The CDX, the next trim up, includes all of the aforementioned items and adds climate and traction control, CD changer and an electric drivers seat. The final trim, the CDX E, comes with added leather seats and sat-nav.

bullet Performance and Economy

The Leganza isn't enjoyable to drive with the steering feeling vague and the ride quality being extremely poor and uncomfortable. The noise levels in the car are also horrendous with pretty much all the wind, road and engine noise being carried through to the cabin. The manual gearbox is also dreadful with you constantly hunting for the gears. This is not a smooth and refined car and will nowhere near match its German competitors.

bullet What it's like to Drive

Although there have been no recalls on the Leganza (a rarity for a Daewoo) there have been some serious problems with the car. Reliability surveys carried out show that most of the problems are with the cars engine and the manual gearbox. Both of these issues will cost a lot to repair as well. Daewoo's repair costs are also higher than most of its rivals so you are likely to be forking out a substantial amount if you're unfortunate.
