Mitsubishi Galant Saloon 1993-1997

The Galant is a family car for those who want to stand out from the crowd as its aggressive looks and square front end separate from other bland looking family cars. It offers a fair amount of luxury and equipment for your money too and the two engines aren’t bad either giving good performance whilst still achieving respectable fuel efficiency figures. Although the Galant is not the best car in its category, it certainly isn’t the worst. In fact it offers a good option to its competitors and will be far cheaper.

Pros and Cons:

  Good as a long distance cruiser

• There is limited headroom in the back
  Interiors are dull and cheap looking

Exterior and Interior

The Galant comes in two different variants as an estate or a saloon and stands out in the family car market with its aggressive looks. The interior isn’t particularly good with some of the materials looking cheap and bland. The seats are all comfortable though with plenty of legroom, however, the sloping roof line does mean that taller back seat passenger may find headroom is too tight. The boot is a good size in both models and they come with the option of folding flat the split folding back seats to increase the loading space further.

It does come with plenty of equipment for your money though with the GLS and SE trim levels offering the best all round value for money coming with air-con, a CD stereo, cruise control and electric windows.

Engines

There are only two petrol engines in the Galant. The first option is a 134bhp 2.0-litre. The second option is the bigger V6 unit which is a 2.5-litre engines that produces 161bhp.

Performance and Economy

The 2.0-litre is the better engine to go for. It may be the slightly slower engine but still goes from 0-60mph in 9.4 seconds and achieves 34mpg. The 2.5-litre V6 is faster, but doesn’t offer the performance you would expect it to going from 0-60mph in 8.0 seconds. At least it doesn’t lose too much economy when compared to the 2.0-litre as it manages 31mpg. The 2.0 is also cheaper to insure falling into group 12 whilst the V6 falls into group 14.

What it's like to Drive

The handling overall is rather disappointing, when you look at the aggressive styling of the car you would hope that the performance and handling would match. In the case of the Galant it doesn’t. Although the handling isn’t too bad there is more body roll in the corners than you would want due to the soft suspension. It does make a good cruiser though soaking up all the bumps easily, the steering is responsive and there is plenty of grip, but in the corners you never feel really comfortable at speeds, but saying that you don’t have to slow down and crawl around them either.

Faults and Repairs

The Galant’s reliability stats are superb with very few problems being reported. There are some things to look out for though. Namely the automatic gearbox which can prove costly to fix as can many other mechanical problems. The brakes make up for most of the repairs so make sure they are sharp when test driving a car. Also make sure the when you brake hard that the car continues to travel in a straight line. Another area that is worth checking is the suspension as this can cause issues and that can be very costly to fix. Servicing and repair costs are slightly more than that of their rivals but with its excellent reliability record you are unlikely to be spending as much on repairs as its rivals either.
