Toyota - Previa

It's hardly a cheap choice in the big MPV field, but Previa seats seven or eight people and has convenient sliding rear side doors. It's a little less flexible in eight-seater form, with rear sliding bench seats, so for full family-friendly adaptability you need a costlier seven-seater version. Equipment is good, the driving position is commanding, and ride and refinement are among the best in class.
Engines are 2.0 turbodiesel or 2.4 petrol, with the manual 2.0 TD giving up to 40mpg. It's the preferred choice thanks to its smooth, willing acceleration right up to the legal limit. The petrol car with its auto box feels quicker but you pay for it at the pumps. Body roll is well controlled, and Previa handles confidently.
Reliability is supreme, and everything feels well put together. Some rivals have classier interiors, but Previa lasts well - there are plenty of tidy early 1990s about.
