Toyota - Yaris Verso

There's a 1.3 petrol and 1.4 diesel. The diesel is the marginally better engine, as it's punchy, pulls well and is frugal - but it commands a premium. The ride is a little on the firm side, but it's otherwise good to drive. Bodyroll is well contained, the steering is sharp and it's nifty around town.
The five-door Yaris Verso has limited luggage space, so the seats needed to be folded down to make the most of its height. After that it's possible to carry surprisingly large loads, although a rear-hinged door makes it less practical than it could be.
The cabin look is plain, but it's functional and exceptionally well built. It's easy to find a comfortable driving position. Large windows means that visibility is good too. Although servicing can be pricey, other running costs are affordable and, as with all Toyota's, it's very well built.
