Vauxhall - Vectra |
![]() |
Vectra is not far behind Mondeo in the keenly contested medium family sector. It's safe and sturdily built, with a spacious, refined and well-equipped cabin. Used prices are very competitive.
| Very comfortable and spacious; good equipment | |
| A quality offering that's better finished than old Vectra | |
| Competitive used prices and running costs | |
| Not as sharply styled or as good to drive as Mondeo | |
| Depreciates heavily | |
| Ford, Peugeot, Renault and VW do diesels better |
This second generation Vectra is bigger and classier than the previous range. It's slightly smaller than Mondeo or Passat but the estate is the most spacious load-lugger in the class; all versions fit five occupants plus luggage in comfort.
Quality and refinement are plus points. It's a quiet car, even at motorway speeds, and ride quality is above average. Solid construction is complemented by lots of safety equipment; and interior finish and materials are superior to the old Vectra.
Petrol engines range from a willing 120 bhp 1.8, the most common unit, up to 3.2 V6. The 2.0T is perhaps the best choice. The 2.2 DTi could be quieter but is punchy and economical. Handling is assured but steering is not as precise as Mondeo.
Equipment levels are generous: Elite has the most goodies; Elegance is more than adequate. Running costs are reasonable if you avoid heavy first year depreciation.
