The chunky Golf Mk 3 remains perhaps the best older small family car. Over-engineered in a way that modern cars tend not to be, it lasts well and gives few problems if cared for correctly.
Roomy enough for family use, Golf is also safe by the standards of its time. Even older cars are usually free of rattles and creaks, and paintwork and interiors resist the ravages of time.
Its heavy body and old-tech engines mean that Golf's performance is adequate rather than exciting - almost sluggish in the case of 1.4 and 1.9D models. The well respected GTi 16v and VR6 redress the balance for the enthusiastic driver. Handling is predictable and composed, with nicely weighted power steering standard except on early 1.4 models. Firm ride is offset by supportive seats.
Compared with an Escort or Astra of similar age, this Golf is definitely worth the extra.
