Cardiff is a large city located in south Wales. It is the Welsh capital and the 10th largest city in the UK. It has an estimated population of 346,100. Cardiff is the biggest commercial centre in Wales. Consequently, most of the Welsh media and the Welsh cultural and sporting institutions are based here. Cardiff is a top tourist destination in Wales, receiving more than 18.2 million visitors a year. It was a small town up until the start of the 19th century, when the transport of coal and the development of the port gave rise to its major city credentials.
Cardiff is a hugely active city with regards sport and was named the European City of Sport in 2009. The Millennium stadium is home to the national union rugby team and national football team. There are also numerous other stadiums in the city used by many other football, rugby and cricket clubs. Cardiff supported the 2012 Olympics by hosting 11 football matches and the games opening event.
