Plymouth is a historic city situated on the south-west coast of England. It is the ceremonial county of Devon. It covers an area of 30.61 square miles and has an estimated population of 258,700. Notably, the city has a large student population, with the University of Plymouth ranked as the 6th largest university in the UK.

Plymouth is a famous shipping port that has played an important role in trade with America, throughout history. Notably, Plymouth was the location from where the ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ departed to travel to the ‘New World’. The city is also an important area for the Royal Navy. Devonport was originally an important ship-building town. Today, HMNB Devonport is the largest operational naval base in Western Europe. Plymouth is famous for its gin too. The Plymouth Gin distillery has been producing gin since the 1793 and was conveniently located for distribution by the Royal Navy.

There are a number of beautiful locations in and around the city such as the Hoe and the Barbican. The former was where Sir Francis Drake famously played a game of bowls before he set sail to fight the Spanish Armada.

Plymouth also has a few large sport teams including Plymouth Argyle (football team), Plymouth Albion (rugby team) and the Plymouth Raiders (basketball team). Argyle is by far the largest team of the three and has a dedicated local fan base.
