Preston is a city in the county of Lancashire in the north of England. It was originally known as Prestune, as recorded in the Domesday book in1086. When combined with the surrounding areas, Preston forms part of the City of Preston local government district.
Preston is home to St Walburge’s Church, which hosts the tallest church spire in England, at 94 meters high. Another noteworthy landmark includes the Harris Museum, which opened in 1893. This contains archaeological artifacts, fine art and decorative art collections.
The city has an important business economy, with one of its biggest contributors the UK defense contractor BAE Systems, who design, develop and manufacture aircraft and aerospace systems. BAE Systems have their Military Aircraft headquarters in nearby Warton, and two other major facilities on either side of the city. Another large company based in the area is Carphone Warehouse, who took over a facility in the Ashton-on-Ribble area of the city.
Celebrities hailing from the area include England and Lancashire cricketer Andrew Flintoff, and radio DJ and journalist Mary Anne Hobbs.
