Bentley Says SUV Coming Soon

Bentley Says SUV Coming Soon Image

Bentleys have traditionally been just a little bit out of the range of the average car buyer.  That does not mean the normal guy in the street doesn't dream about owning a Bentley, though.  If that is also the case with you, that dream is about to become just that little bit more enticing: Bentley has plans to launch an SUV of their own.

According to press reports, the CEO of the company, Wolfgang Durheimer, has confirmed that the luxury UK car manufacturer will soon enter the SUV sector, thereby providing stiff competition to the likes of the Range Rover and the Porsche Cayenne.

If the name Durheimer doesn't sound familiar to you: he used to be in charge of research and development over at Porsche and he was the mastermind behind the development of the Cayenne.  This is not the first time he has hinted that a Bentley SUV was on the cards, but it seems that in the current lean economic times it has become imperative for Bentley to expand its product range.

The SUV market is huge in China, Europe and the U.S. - where Bentleys have traditionally sold very well.  This is why Durheimer's plans for a Bentley SUV could make more sense than is immediately apparent.

The company has no firm details available yet, but when AutoExpress asked him about this at the Detroit Motor show in January 2011, he said the car would be based on a modified Porsche Cayenne platform.
