Driving impressions of the new BMW 320d Sport

Driving impressions of the new BMW 320d Sport Image

The new BMW 3-series does not represent a revolutionary advance when compared to its predecessor.  Having said that, the new car is an improvement on the previous model in virtually every respect.

When the previous model was first released in 2005, it did not feel dated or lacking in any important aspect compared to its rivals - an important achievement considering the rapid pace at which the motoring industry is currently developing.

The interior of the new 3-series will look quite familiar to anyone who has spent significant time in the previous model - or in virtually any modern BMW for that matter.  The most obvious change is that the cabin of the new car feels decidedly more spacious than before.  This can partially be ascribed to a wheelbase that is two inches longer.  For the first time BMW now has a 3-series that does not feel cramped when compared to the C-Class Mercedes.

The majority of new BMW 3s will have 4-cylinder rather than 6-cylinder engines, which might mean a little less "character" but certainly not a lack of performance.  The company's Efficient Dynamics programme ensures excellent performance combined with outstanding fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures.

The 320d now delivers more than 180 bhp, which significantly boosts performance.  What is particularly impressive is the car's mid-range acceleration, boosted by a full 320Nm of torque.

If there is anything negative to be said about the car it is that the diesel engine is surprisingly raucous when pressed hard - although under normal driving conditions it is very quiet.
