Driving impressions of the Renault Megane 2012

Driving impressions of the Renault Megane 2012 Image

Important improvements under-the-skin have turned this Renault into a significant rival for cars such as the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus.

Renault refers to the new revamped Megane as the "Megane Collection 2012."  At first glance it seems rather odd that the car manufacturer should use language from the fashion industry when the exterior of the new car is the one aspect that has been changed the least.

Significant changes under the bonnet, however, make the new car strong competition for rivals such as the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus.

Let us first look at the external changes: top level models are fitted with a gloss black finish to their bumpers and they also get LED daytime running lights.  The company offers a variety of new alloy wheel designs and a few coupes now have chrome trim on the air intakes - and that's that.

The changes that took place under the bonnet, however, have converted the company's already highly efficient engines to bring them very close to the top of the pack in terms of emissions and economy.

As far as petrol engines go, a new 1.2-litre TCe engine is available.  It has an aluminium block that utilises turbo-charging and direct fuel injection to deliver 115 bhp and 190Nm of torque.  This engine will, to an increasing extent, replace Renault's 1.6-litre 16-valve normally aspirated petrol engine that will now only be used in entry-level Meganes.  Buyers do not need to feel concerned about the smaller engine, though - it produces 5bhp more than the 1.6 version and it also has more usable torque.
