Top up but do not panic says Cameron

Top up but do not panic says Cameron Image

David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the UK, suggests that car owners should adopt a sensible approach and top up to prepare for a possible strike by drivers of fuel tankers.

Cameron made his comments only a few hours after the Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude warned that any such strike would risk the lives of innocent people.

Maude says drivers should fill up their spare jerry cans if possible, although more than one motoring organisation warned that motorists should not resort to panic buying.

Maude accused the relevant trade union of irresponsible behaviour.  He added that a few hundred military crews would receive special training to replace striking tanker drivers in an attempt to make sure that schools, garages and hospitals enjoy an uninterrupted supply of fuel.

The Fire Brigades Union, however, does not share Maude's views on stockpiling fuel.  It issued a warning that this would result in a massive increase in the risk of explosions and fire.

The General Secretary of the FBU, Matt Wrack, said: "This is not sensible advice€¦Those without garages may be tempted to store fuel in the home.  In the event of a fire in the house or a neighbouring property, it would be disastrous."

He added that it was illegal to store in excess of ten litres of fuel in two five-litre containers at a residential property.  That, he said, accounts for only about one third of a tank for the majority of cars - which made the advice of little practical use.
