Turn
on your TV, read the papers or listen to the radio this week (visit
the bbc) and you could not miss the news that the government is focusing
on climate change and our effect on the planet.
The manufacturers are all aware that the impact of large 4 X 4’s and SUV’s
on the environment and whilst the Americans have had an insatiable thirst for
these vehicles for many years the UK has seen a huge increase in people deciding
upon a 4 X 4 as opposed to the hatchbacks or estate cars that were traditionally
used for the school run or family workhorse.
So just as Land Rover (www.landrover.com) introduced the first Range Rover in 1970 and have enjoyed exploiting a very lucrative niche for over 35 years proving particularly popular over the pond in the US, Dodge appear to have decided to exploit the UK market and we will see a far more of their range on our streets including the new Dodge Caliber (www.dodge.co.uk).
The Caliber is a mini-SUV and it looks a much bigger car on
paper than it does in the flesh. The car comes in five ‘flavours’
S, SE, SXT and SXT Sport which offers 18” alloy wheels. SXT models feature
air con, leather trimmed seating and automatic transmission at no extra cost.
Starting at £11495 they are a very tempting proposition and I am sure
they will prove popular with both sexes as their styling is more aggressive
than some smaller 4 X 4’s and it comes in a four cylinder 1.8 VVT engine
or 2 litre petrol and finally a 138 B bhp diesel version.
Whilst the Caliber is not going to save the planet it will have far less impact on it than some of its bigger brothers.
