Alfa Romeo recently made an announcement regarding major revisions to its range of MiTo supermini cars. Some of these changes, such as lower prices, will no doubt be welcomed by car loan buyers. Others will certainly cause some surprise among Alfa fans.
In the first place the range is trimmed down from 17 models to nine – which seems to be a fair decision in the current economy. New trim levels will also be welcomed by most car loan buyers. What could unpleasantly surprise many fans is the fact that Alfa seems to have gone backwards in terms of technology with some of the proposed engine changes.
The new entry-level model will now be the Progression. The car will come with a 1.4litre 8v petrol engine with a power output of only 78bhp – 17bhp less than its predecessor. In its defence it has to be said that the new engine has lower emissions and still comes with start-stop as a standard feature.
The old Turismo and Lusso models will be replaced by the Sprint. This model is now available with a 1.4 litre 8-valve petrol engine, delivering a satisfactory 105bhp as well as having lower emissions than its predecessor.
The Sprint is also available with a 1.3-litre turbo-diesel delivering 85bhp. Once again this is less than the 95bhp of its predecessor, but again you get improved CO2 emission levels of only 95g/km. This of course means zero tax.
The top of the range is the Quadrifoglio Verde, which retains the 170bhp 1.4 turbo-petrol engine of the Cloverleaf.
