Car manufacturer ALFA ROMEO has announced it is turning back time by enabling consumers to buy one of its luxury vehicles for under £9,000.
It is the first time motorists have been able to get their hands on a brand new car manufactured by the Italian firm for less than £9,000 since the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago, the company claims.
According to the marque, the introduction of the government's scrappage scheme means drivers bringing in a car over ten years old to be scrapped can use the £2,000 on offer to buy a new Alfa MiTo 1.4 16V Turismo for just £8,995.
"The last Alfa Romeo to be sold in the UK for under £9,000 was the five door Alfa 33 in 1989," the company explained.
Alfa Romeo has backed the government's scrappage scheme and is going even further, offering up to £3,000 on selected models in addition to the £1,000 put in by the government.
Chancellor Alistair Darling announced the proposed scrappage scheme in his Budget speech in an effort to boost the new car market, which has suffered during the economic downturn.
It is hoped the move could also increase interest in used cars.
