In further good news for eco-conscious UK car loan buyers, Audi has announced a range of models that will run on compressed natural gas. Production will start in 2013. The company wants to have a neutral CO2 balance for its complete model range as soon as possible.
The e-gas project will focus on compressed natural gas vehicles, fuel cell vehicles and electric cars and consist of two factors: Audi will make a contribution to the construction of offshore wind turbines in the North Sea, which will generate “clean” power that is then delivered to the public electricity grid. It will also create a new power plant that will then utilise the remaining green power in the production of hydrogen through a process of electrolysis.
Audi is convinced that the e-gas project will illustrate to people that it is possible to store green power effectively, regardless of the location. When sea winds are strong, unused power can be converted to e-gas and then stored in an energy storage system that can later be converted to electricity if needed again.
The first component of the project is the construction of four large wind turbine power plants at an offshore wind-power park in the North Sea. They will be able to product about 53GWh of electricity every year. On average these offshore plants produce about 40% more energy than their onshore counterparts.
One of the cars that will form the heart of Audi’s project will be the Audi A3 TCNG – a vehicle that runs on e-gas.
