If Audi has never before taken direct aim at Lamborghini, the company is certainly doing so now with their new R8 GT Spyder. The motoring press has just released the first official pictures of the lovely new Spyder – and it might well be that Audi has launched a supercar war with their latest model.
According to the company the new Spyder will be able to beat the Lamborghini Gallardo Performante in the 0-62 miles per hour sprint.
Both these supercars were of course constructed off the same basic architecture. They also share the same engine and gearbox and both of them carry no unnecessary weight in an attempt to make them as fast as possible.
Interested car loan buyers will have to fork out a hefty £176,000 for the limited edition left hand drive model. On the other hand, what do car buyers expect to pay for a car that has a V10 monster-engine that produces 552 bhp? If that kind of money is no problem to you, you will be able to take delivery of your R8 Spyder before the end of the year.
The Audi claims a top speed of 199 miles per hour. The Lamborghini claims 201mph – but the Audi is faster in the 0-62mph sprint – 3.8 seconds versus 3.9 seconds for the Lamborghini.
It is a contest the end of which we will probably never see, and whether interested buyers are going to use their car loan to buy an Audi or a Lamborghini is in the end probably also a matter of personal taste.
