At last we have solid evidence that BMW plans a radical overhaul of the company’s 3-Series range. The motoring press has published the first spy shots of a 4-Series coupe – a brand new model with custom styling and a decidedly sportier look.
The shots were captured by German motoring journalists.
This will essentially be BMW’s response to Audi’s extremely popular A5. Do not rush to apply for a car loan just yet, however – the first of the range – a 2-door coupe – is not expected on UK showroom floors before late 2013. A 4-door “Gran Coupe” and a cabriolet will follow somewhat later.
The spy shots show a heavily camouflaged car, but it is not difficult to make out the lower front end and wider grille. The rear end is more tapered and significantly sleeker to go with the sporty image.
Under the bonnet the 4-series will, for now, not get a new power source. It will rather share engines with the new 3-series sedan. This includes a 2-litre turbo engine delivering 242 bhp borrowed from the 328i and a 2-litre diesel shared with the 320d. Upgraded versions of the famous BMW straight six diesel engines are also on the cards.
All 4-series cars will give buyers a choice of an eight-speed automatic gearbox or a six-speed manual one. They will also all get Efficient Dynamics technology such as brake energy recuperation and stop-start.
The 4-series will be significantly more expensive than the 3-series range, but it will allow for greater levels of personalisation and it will receive a higher level of equipment.
