Car manufacturer BMW is seeking to become the first company to be crowned International Engine of the Year winner for the fifth consecutive time.
The firm has won the award for the past four years thanks to its continued developments in improving efficiency and cutting emissions.
Its success has made the BMW marque even more sought-after than before, with plenty of used car customers recognising the cost savings that can be made by investing in a vehicle with a highly efficient engine.
However, the organisers of this year's event have warned BMW faces a tough challenge to keep its title, with a number of automakers developing more eco-friendly engines over the past year.
According to Engine Technology International magazine, there are several strong contenders for the award, including Toyota's 1.8-litre Prius and the HONDA 1.3-litre Insight, as well as Daimler's new MERCEDES engine.
Daimler recently went into administration and has been bought by Italian automaker Fiat, with the two companies in discussions over setting up a new venture to take both organisations and their separate brands forward.
