The accolade of World Green Car of the Year has been presented to BMW for its 118d model at the New York International Auto Show.
BMW was given the award for its EfficientDynamic programme, which is fitted inside the 118d model, offering buyers reduced CO2 output.
The system aims to cut carbon emissions by utilising technology such electric power steering, an energy regeneration system and an auto start-stop programme.
Chairman and chief executive officer of BMW North America Tom Purves commented: "The measures that we've implemented within our EfficientDynamics strategy into every BMW mean that we're able to provide customers with the driving pleasure they expect from a BMW, while still meeting the stringent requirements for fuel-efficiency and low emissions."
Car loan customers may be interested to read that the Mazda2 was voted World Car of the Year, while the AUDI R8 took the World Performance Car and World Design accolades.
