If one wanted to know which cars are the most popular among the UK car loan public, you would normally look at retail figures of the various manufacturers. There is another way to go about this, however - look at what professional car thieves are stealing the most. These guys should know what people want, after all - they have to sell the cars again!
The people over at Tracker stolen vehicle recovery systems have all the statistics relating to which cars are most likely to get stolen during the next year.
According to their latest figures, the most popular cars among car thieves are the BMW X5 series and after these, the Range Rover series. In third place we have another BMW, the M3, with the Audi RS4 taking fourth place in the list of "top ten most frequently stolen and recovered vehicles of 2010."
The company says that 65% of the cars that were stolen and subsequently recovered by them were worth an average of £25,000. Six percent were worth between £50 000 and £100 000. The cheapest cars that were stolen, recovered by Tracker, were a Ford Sierra and a Peugeot 406 - both worth about £1,000. It is unknown whether the owners still had outstanding car loans on either of them.
The Managing Director of Tracker, Stephen Doran, says "Once again our top ten list shows the thieves' favourites, with the Mercedes SLK and CLK also remaining at the top of the league."
The number nine position might come as a surprise to many car loan buyers: the VW Golf proves that it is not just owners of luxury cars that need car insurance.
