Car manufacturer CITROEN has announced motor racing legend John Surtees will drive its electric-powered vehicle in the 2009 Brighton to London Eco Rally.
To be held on Sunday June 8th, the Eco Rally is designed to raise awareness of environmentally-friendly vehicles, with a collection of low-emission cars being driven between Brighton and London.
Citroen is entering its all-electric conversion, the C1 ev'ie, which has zero carbon emissions and could prove a hit with motorists looking to go green in the future.
That could help boost the number of environmentally-friendly vehicles trickling through into the used car market in the years to come.
John Surtees has become an icon in the word of motorsport having become the only person to have won world championships on both two and four wheels.
The RAC Foundation has recently warned the government that it could be overwhelmed by demand for electric vehicles in the coming years.
A report from the organisation suggested as many as a fifth of motorists in the UK could be looking for electric cars in the next five years, but the government has said the infrastructure will not be in place for electric cars to be mass-produced until 2017 at the earliest.
