French car manufacturer CITROEN has been promoting its scrappage scheme, pointing out customers could get their hands on £2,000 to spend on a new model immediately.
Chancellor Alistair Darling announced earlier this week that the government would be introducing a scrappage scheme designed to encourage people with vehicles over ten years old to trade them in for scrap, in exchange for £2,000 of government money to spend on new, more environmentally-friendly vehicles.
However, that scheme will not come into being until mid-May, while Citroen's initiative is already up-and-running.
"The chancellor has realised the benefits of a scrappage scheme in the UK, and this will promote the replacement of older, more polluting vehicles with cleaner, safer and more economical models," said Xavier Duchemin, managing director of Citroen UK.
He continued: "However, car buyers don't have to wait for the government, they can benefit from our £2,000 incentive right now."
The scrappage scheme was just one of a number of measures in the Budget designed to stimulate the UK economy as the recession continues to deepen.
However, public borrowing will rise to a record £175 billion this year as ministers seek to fund these various initiatives.
