It has now been 30 years that Fiat has managed to keep things simple with the Panda. All indications are that the company will continue with this successful recipe with the third generation model, although in a much more modern package. At least this is what we can deduce from the first official pictures of the new Panda released before its debut at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
Since the company launched the very first model way back in 1980, it has sold more than six and a half million of these nifty little cars, so it comes as no surprise that they are not eager to make any aggressive changes that might rock the boat.
Having said that, virtually every part of the car is new. It has also grown by a couple of centimetres, which will benefit interior space. The new Panda is a full 3.65 metres long – which is ten centimetres longer than the Fiat 500 – and it now has more than sufficient space for five adults. Fiat has also managed to make the interior more flexible. The passenger seat can fold into a nice little table and the split-folding back seat can slide forward and backward. The backrests are somewhat thinner to improve legroom.
The overall design might not be radically different from the current Panda, but the new model definitely has softer edges and the front end looks similar to newer models such as the Qubo and the Doblo.
To buy yourself one of these fun and affordable cars, you will need an auto loan of about £8,000 – or its equivalent in cash.
