New diesel engine to boost Fiat's green image

Feb 8 2008

Motorists looking to take out a car loan to purchase a greener model may want to turn their attention to a new engine being offered in the FIAT Bravo range.

According to Fiat, the Bravo has become the first car in its class to be fitted with a Euro 5-compliant powertrain ahead of the deadline in 2009, when the engines become mandatory.

The 16-valve engine has a capacity of 1.6 litres and is called a MultiJet. The manufacturer already states that the model is spacious and sensuous, now potentially adding green to the list.

Fiat hopes the engine will reinforce its green credentials, stating that it is among the best auto makers in Europe with regard to average CO2 emission production.

The company has also outlined plans to become the leader in terms of weighted CO2 averages.

Last year, Fiat Group chief executive officer Sergio Marchionne commented that "regardless of what other car makers will do, our Group is committed, by 2012, to reaching the lowest weighted average CO2 emission level for the cars it produces, with respect to competitors".
