Some auto loan buyers who were fortunate enough to attend the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year will already be familiar with the Ford B-Max. The rest of us are still waiting patiently to get the first glimpse of the new Fiesta-based Ford. One lucky car enthusiast from Glasgow, a certain Alistair Ferguson, recently spotted a heavily camouflaged B-Max near this city. The test version that she saw was fully laden, which makes it clear that Ford is now testing the new car in all earnest.
When Ford displayed the concept car at the Geneva Motor Show, they made it clear that car buyers in the UK will have to wait until 2012 to buy the production model, at a price of around £13,000.
The B-Max will replace the Ford Fusion, which did not sell very well. The design of the car was inspired by the new Ford Focus – even up to the trademark trapezoidal grille in front and the headlights with their distinctly aggressive appearance.
What really makes the B-Max unique, however, is its ground-breaking pillarless design, complete with sliding doors. It gives the car a huge side opening of one and a half metres.
The B-Max will be powered by Ford’s latest Eco Boost range of petrol engines, the most popular of which will no doubt be the 3-cylinder 1-litre that boasts fuel consumption of close to 70 miles per gallon.
Moving to the interior, the car will offer seating for five, with rear seats that can fold flat. Optional extras include leather seats complete with colour-coded stitching and a panoramic sun roof.
