Ford Announces First Range of EcoBoost Cars

The 1-litre engine is a new addition to the EcoBoost range.  Currently it consists of engines ranging from 1.6 litres to 3.5 litres – which are sold worldwide.

The Focus will initially be available with a choice of two EcoBoost engines in Europe; one with 120PS and the other one with 100PS.  They will be fitted with six-speed and five-speed gearboxes respectively.  The company plans to introduce the engine to the Chinese and North American markets later.

This will be the smallest engine in the whole Ford range, but do not expect it to be a sluggard – to the contrary, it will shape up quite well compared to the current 1.6-litre petrol engine, while emission figures will be much lower at 120 grams per kilometre.

It was developed at the company’s UK technical centre at Dunton and comes with a high-speed turbocharger that has been designed to handle speeds of up to 250,000rpm with ease.  Peak torque is a quite respectable 170Nm.

The design team had one additional objective in mind: to produce an engine with refined and smooth performance.  They achieved a higher level of refinement with a brilliant innovation: covering the two main engine drive belts in oil.  This makes the engine both quieter and more efficient.

If by now you feel like shouting “car finance!” you will have to curtail your enthusiasm a bit –the new engine will not be available before next year.
