This year Ford is celebrating its 100th year of car production in the UK. The company might have had its roots in the United States, but over the years many UK car finance buyers have come to see it as a true British institution.
Ford has been one of the top selling manufacturers in the UK for the past number of decades and its 100th UK birthday celebrations will no doubt create substantial interest among UK car buyers.
The company presented a Gala dinner at the London Science Museum on the 26th May this year. The guest of honour was none other than Ford’s Executive Chairman Bill Ford, who underlined the company’s commitment to the future by announcing a new scholarship programme. In terms of the programme, 100 outstanding students will each receive a £10,000 grant to help fund their studies.
When one is 100 years old it is always interesting to reflect on your past achievements. Ford has indeed had quite a number of those since the first Model T rolled off the production line at Trafford Park in Manchester a hundred years ago.
By 1914 the company was selling 10,000 cars a year in the UK. Today Ford has captured 15% of the UK car market, with sales of just over 200,000 in 2010. It has been the best selling car brand in Britain for 39 consecutive years and nearly 11 million cars, trucks and tractors were built at Dagenham over a period of 71 years.
