Motorists browsing new cars for sale and looking for a greener model could be interested in an award handed out by experts to the FORD Focus 1.6 TDCi Style.

The model has won the Green Car of the Year Award at the first-ever What Car? Green Awards, which could intrigue drivers considering taking out a car loan for a more environmentally-friendly vehicle.

The Focus's credentials saw it beat off 23 other contenders to take the top accolade, in categories ranging from green super MINI to green sports car.

What Car? group editor Steve Fowler said: "This Focus shows you don't have to slum it to do your bit for the planet. It's proof that outstanding efficiency and lower emissions can be achieved without using prohibitively expensive technologies."

Other winners at the competition included French car maker Citroen, which scooped two accolades including a green award for the C5 family car.

The winning Ford model incurs and annual vehicle excise duty charge of just £35 and will do around 65.6mpg on a combined cycle.
