Automaker FORD has announced it has boosted its share in the new car market thanks to its April sales initiative.
The company saw its share of the sector increase by 3.9 percentage points compared with April last year, giving it a market-leading 18.4 per cent of registrations in the UK during April 2009.
The success demonstrates that car manufacturers can entice motorists into the new car market, which has seen sales slide over recent months as the credit crunch has hit and more people have turned their attention to the used car market.
"Ford's rising share in April has been achieved in the most challenging conditions of weaker industry demand and an unfavourable exchange rate," pointed out Nigel Sharp, Ford of Britain's managing director.
He added: "It is an encouraging platform from which to launch our exciting marketing offers, aimed at helping customers to get maximum benefit from the government's new vehicle scrappage scheme."
Chancellor Alistair Darling announced in his Budget plans to launch a scrappage scheme in May this year, which will allow motorists with old vehicles to receive up to £2,000 to have their car scrapped and replaced with a new, more environmentally-friendly model.
