Ford cars are highly popular among many UK car finance buyers – not least because the company’s range of EcoBoost engines is already very competitive when it comes to fuel efficiency.
Eco-conscious car finance buyers will, therefore, no doubt welcome the company’s announcement that it plans to introduce an even smaller and more environmentally-friendly model to its line-up.
The 1-litre 3-cylinder engine was developed at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre. It focuses on friction reduction and providing better thermal efficiency – especially when the engine is still busy warming up. This is the time when CO2 levels are usually at their highest.
The new engine carries a whole array of technological innovations that could well become regular features in future Ford engines. Torque output is claimed to be similar to that of most conventional 1.6 litre engines. It uses twin independent variable camshaft timing and direct injection and turbo-charging. Fuel economy is improved by an offset crankshaft and the cylinder block is warmed up before reaching the cylinder head by using a split cooling system.
On top of that Ford has also announced its intention to launch two new transmission systems – one made exclusively for hybrid vehicles and the other one an eight-speed model. Ford U.S. already produces more hybrid transmissions than any other carmaker.
The new systems will be both designed and manufactured by Ford and the company claims that the continuously variable electronic system will improve performance compared to that provided by current transmission units.
