Car manufacturer FORD has announced it has taken more than 3,000 extra orders from first-time customers in the new car market, citing the scrappage scheme as being responsible for the boost.
The company has seen orders surge over the past month since the scrappage scheme was announced.
Chancellor Alistair Darling revealed in his Budget speech that the initiative would provide up to £2,000 for a driver to scrap his or her old car and replace it with a more environmentally-friendly, modern version.
The scheme was designed to help boost the flagging new car market, which has seen sales dip as the recession deepens and more people look to buy used cars to cut costs.
"Ford is putting its full weight behind the UK vehicle scrappage scheme, which will not only boost sales but will also bring positive employment and environmental benefits too," said Nigel Sharp, Ford Britain managing director.
He added: "Ford's substantial backing of subsidised vehicle scrapping helps to secure the 100,000 auto industry jobs in the UK dependant on our company, dealerships and suppliers."
Ford and fellow manufacturer HONDA delayed the start of their scrappage scheme earlier this week after querying some of the provisions within the government's plans.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has since reported the issues have been resolved and all participants in the scheme are now fully engaged in the initiative.
