Beware of dealer hard sell

May 4 2010
Though car dealers will have you believe that they always think of your best interests, you need to be careful about them ripping you off with some smoothly sold products.
The VIN etching product that is recommended to prevent and discourage the chances of theft for instance is a good one but typically the dealers will charge you far more for the service. Similarly any guarantee offer from the dealer towards repaying the loan taken in the event you are unable to do so also needs to be taken with a pinch of salt as you would now end up owing money to the dealer and that is not going to help your credit score.
Be aware of nicely packaged car loans that promise affordable repayments stretched over a longer period. While they would seem to be ideal for you, do not forget that you will end up paying far more than you would have expected. Do not get confused into paying more than you can afford.
Some dealers will also coax you into making payment towards processing fees or prep charges and will often charge you more than the standard. So make sure you know the standard charges before agreeing to any such additional payments.
