Working out whether they require a car loan and how they will meet running costs are more likely to be key considerations for female motorists looking at cars for sale, it has been claimed.

Research from Experian found brand reputation and the make and model of a car were more important factors to men than women.

Meanwhile, being able to finance a purchase and meeting running costs were found to be of greater significance to female motorists.

Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian's automotive division, said men could be placing themselves in a "vulnerable" position if they base their decision on "what the car means to them".

"All too often we hear about innocent used car buyers, who see a car advertised privately, it appears to be legitimate and they are persuaded into parting with their money only to later find that it had a hidden history," Mr Fletcher commented.

Motorists, such as those with unsecured Car Loans, ought to check a car's status before committing to a purchase, he advised.

Earlier this week, HPI warned motorists about the growing risk of car 'cloning'.

The organisation said an increasing number of criminals were replacing the number plates and identification number of cars with those of similar models.
