Dealing with the dealer

Jul 18 2010
The process of buying a new or a used car from a dealer involves a lot of haggling, negotiation and one-upmanship. The dealer would obviously want to sell you a high priced product to get the maximum commission and will lead you towards that goal by asking you certain questions. It is up to you to be vary and aware of those questions and answer them such that you do not get trapped in the sales pitch.
It needs to be mentioned here that not all questions are tricky. After all, the dealer needs to get some idea about the customer’s interest, his motivation to buy, his payment capabilities and so on and is within his rights to ask questions which would provide him just that.
One common and typical question that a dealer would start off with is the amount you as a customer would be comfortable paying monthly. Your answer here would give him the opportunity to assess your financial capability and he can then decide on what kind of a product he should be selling to you. It is therefore better for you to go prepared with an honest answer to this question so that you also do not bite off more than you can chew.
