How much should you spend on car repair?

Jun 13 2010 Those of us having cars that have been used for some time often are faced with the enigma of how much money should we spend on its repair. While the answer to this depends on a variety of factors and is pretty much an individualistic decision, it is necessary to take the advice of a good mechanic or somebody conversant with the working of a car before committing to major repairs on a car that has been used for more than three or four years.
For example, if the engine unit control of the car has blown out, then you would like to repair or even replace it since the car is otherwise still in good working condition and you would like to use it for a much longer period. However, replacing parts in a car that is over eight years old may not be a prudent decision and you must seriously think of disposing it off since any major repair that you undertake on the vehicle may still not be enough to get it running for very long and this expense would be a futile one, a year down the road.
