Before going to a particular dealer, you can ask for quotes from various other dealers so that you can sit and compare them without any stress or pressure from the sales person.
You now have an idea of the price you can pay as well as what you can expect from the sale of your used car and armed with this information; you can boldly negotiate a trade-in of your existing used car with the new one and pay the difference. Since in most cases, you would never get the value you desire for your used car, it is necessary for you to negotiate hard and not give up till you work out a price that is reasonable.
