Car insurance customers may be interested to learn that drivers are being warned against car criminals following a series of registration document thefts.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has recently issued an alert regarding criminals who steal registration documents as well as the car in question in order to change the licensee name to make the car look like it is legitimately theirs.
This process, known as cloning, is being practiced with the result being that stolen cars are being sold on to members of the public.
It is in this light that HPI has issued a warning for drivers to be extra vigilant against these thieves, whose activities may also have an impact on car insurance premiums.
Nick Lindsay, director of HPI, said: "The cloned vehicles are sold on to unsuspecting members of the public who suffer significant financial losses when their vehicles are confiscated by the police.
"As criminals get ever more resourceful, it is vital car buyers safeguard themselves against all types of vehicle fraud."
HPI is an organisation which checks the history of vehicles, confirming whether a car has good Car Finance, is recorded as stolen or has been written off in the past.
