Drivers cut costs by tampering with number plates?

Motorists already forking out for vehicle costs such as insurance and Car Credit payments may be among those who have tampered with their number plates to avoid fines in the event that they are caught by a speed camera.

According to findings by esure, millions of vehicles may not pass their MOT test if owners mess around with their number plates, as the government plans to introduce more stringent registration plate checks.

Among the results is that more than ten per cent of British motorists have tampered with their plates or would consider doing so if it would mean they could avoid being caught on camera.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at the firm, said that some drivers may be taking such steps to avoid fines, points and higher insurance costs, which people may struggle to pay on top of fuel, tax and car credit payments.

But he added: "Speed cameras can save lives and increase road safety so any measures to improve their effectiveness and stop drivers flouting the law must be welcomed."

MOT checks currently assess plates to ensure they are not liable to fall off.
