A couple of weeks ago we reported that Land Rover boss Colin Green was considering dropping the Defender range completely. It has, after all, had a good run of more than 60 years.
We can now confirm it has been reported that this will not happen. Quite the contrary: at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show those of you who have always dreamt of taking up an auto loan to buy your very own Defender will be surprised to find a completely redesigned Defender – ready for the 21st century.
Land Rover will release the first images next week. Industry insiders have leaked to the motoring press that the model is definitely not just a facelift of the current Defender – it is a futuristic redesign of the current model.
When Land Rover boss Colin green talked to the motoring press a few weeks ago, he only mentioned the “enormous responsibility” of getting it right. “If we get it wrong, we are messing up one of the industry’s biggest icons” he said at the time. There was no mention of the new model, which must have been in an advanced state of development.
The new Defender is expected to use an upgraded version of the heavy-duty platform we first saw in the Discovery 3.
Technical details are sketchy at the moment. What we do know is that the new model will feature an improved Terrain Response System. This, of course, provides for highly advanced levels of traction control, adjusting the suspension, gearbox and engine settings to suit the terrain. The vehicle is expected to have virtually unmatched off-road ability.
