There must be an explanation why the average guy who owns a used car financed with a cheap car loan still has this obsession with beautiful, fast cars. Perhaps it is just that in the old days a man’s horse was his pride; those on horseback could literally look down on others who had to walk. In today’s world the horse has been replaced by the car, which has become the new status symbol to show that you are just that little bit above the rest.
Whatever the case, when the big guys in Hollywood met for the first time to plan a little movie about street racing ten years ago, they most likely never expected it would result in five huge hits and enough money to build an empire.
When Fast Five was released on the 29th April 2011 it made an astounding $86 million in its first weekend. At the time of writing, the movie has already brought in more than $600 million – and there is no end in sight for the fifth instalment of the Fast and Furious series.
Can anyone then blame the bosses over at NBC Universal for immediately starting to plan a follow-up? According to industry rumours number six is already in the pipeline. It will be called Furious 6 and it is expected to debut on the 24th May 2013.
The movie will reportedly star Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Paul Walker. There were talks of Universal turning the franchise into a “heist series.” Whether car lovers will approve of their heroes playing second fiddle to humans will have to be seen.
