The finance you need The car you want

England and Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney was forced to call a motorway patrol to help him after filling his wife's car with the wrong fuel earlier this week.

However, research from the AA shows that the striker is not the only one to have made such costly mistakes when it comes to re-fuelling.

The firm estimates that 150,000 motorists fill their cars with the wrong type of fuel each year, which equates to one every three minutes, Car Finance customers may be interested to know.

Donald MacSporran, technical performance manager at the AA, said: "As with many people who own more than one car, or in this case lots and lots of cars, it's all too easy to absent-mindedly put the wrong fuel in."

Mis-fuel prevention technology developer Caparo estimates that Rooney could face a bill of up to £6,000 to repair Coleen's £90,000 Range ROVER Sport V8.

The company is launching its Rightfuel device to help motorists avoid similar problems themselves.
