Big freeze could lead to trouble for used car drivers
Dec 31 2008Predictions of a severe cold snap at the start of 2009 have led experts to warn drivers of new and used cars that they could face an increased risk of breakdown.
Thousands of UK motorists are expected to be left stranded this coming Monday, as plummeting temperatures begin to take their toll on vehicles.
With the Met Office anticipating readings as low as minus 13 degrees C, UK mail order specialist Car Parts Direct is warning that used cars with weak batteries will fail to start.
New Year's day falls on a Thursday, meaning many cars will be left sitting unused until people return to work the following Monday, and this is expected to exacerbate the problem.
"The combination of freezing weather and vehicles parked up always finds the weaknesses of a vehicle," said Martin Mosley, a spokesman for the firm.
He advised motorists to top up their cars' antifreeze levels in a bid to prevent their cooling systems from freezing over.
UK organisation TyreSafe warned drivers recently that they should also make sure they monitor tyre pressures over the winter period to help reduce the risk of a breakdown.
