Car finance news: DVLA launches online license plate sales
Oct 23 2008Owners of new and used cars seeking to accessorise their vehicles with a new personalised number plate can now do so online.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has launched a new commercial website allowing unsecured Car Loans customers to buy private registrations quickly and easily from the comfort of their homes.
Users had previously been able to search the catalogue of over 28 million plates on the internet, but the DVLA only ever operated a telesales system.
Damien Lawson, marketing manager for DVLA Personalised Registrations, suggested that the boom in internet use had necessitated the change.
"While our telesales scheme has stood a great test of time, with more and more people becoming internet-literate, being able to buy direct online is certainly the future," he said.
The DVLA caused controversy earlier this year when it was accused of selling vehicle registration plates that were easily being changed to spell out words, with critics accusing the organisation of failing to take action against the illegal tampering because they did not want to risk losing the revenue raised from personalised plates sales.
