Car loans customers 'must read up on foreign road rules'

Unsecured Car Loans customers planning to use their new vehicles to take a trip to France could risk coming into trouble with the law, a report claims.

According to car insurance group esure, many British motorists are planning a "booze cruise" in the run-up to Christmas to stock up on cheap alcohol.

However, more than half could end up driving illegally because they are not aware of the rules of the road over there.

An estimated 3.6 million motorists admit that they do not know the speed limits on foreign roads.

Indeed, a third of those polled erroneously believe that driving regulations are the same in other European countries as here in the UK.

This could lead to Car Finance customers incurring fines of as much 1,500 euros, which is the penalty issued to those caught speeding on French roads.

In order to avoid such payouts, new and used car owners should ensure that they read up on the rules of driving overseas before beginning their journey, the firm advised.

Road safety charity Brake last month claimed that more than a quarter of motorists in the UK were risking their safety on the roads by failing to have their eyesight checked.
