More than a quarter of motorists have not had their eyesight checked since acquiring their licence, research reveals.
According to a poll by Specsavers, 26 per cent of drivers admitted to forgoing regular sight checks, with almost half of those conceding that they would probably fail.
Road safety charity Brake condemned the trend, which it said was "worryingly unsafe".
The poll followed the release of plans for new legislation to be introduced across the EU in January 2011.
Under the law, all new and used car owners will be required to take tests at least once every ten years and Dame Mary Perkins, founder of Specsavers, urged the UK to follow suit.
"It is shocking to think that a British driver can go from the age of 17 to 80 without having a sight check. That presents a very real danger on our roads," she said.
A winter warning by the Institute of Advanced Motorists recently urged secured Car Loans customers to take extra care on the roads as visibility is reduced by darker evenings and poor weather.
