Motorists - potentially including Car Loans customers - who use legal hands-free mobile phones still manage to impede other drivers, a new study has suggested.

Research by the University of Utah has found that people who drive and talk on their phones drive an average two mph slower on congested roads than other car loans customers.

As a result, such devices could add as much as 20 hours a year on to the average half-hour journey of motorists, researchers found. The study found that the slow down is due to a lack of concentration on the part of the driver.

University of Utah psychology Professor Dave Strayer said: "At the end of the day, the average person's commute is longer because of that person who is on the cell phone right in front of them."

Last month, the government announced plans to increase the punishment for drivers who use their mobile phones while driving.
